My gummies melted into one clump. How do I know the dose?

Once gummies fuse into one mass you cannot break off a piece and know what is in it. On a 5 mg CBD gummy that is a nuisance. On a high-potency THC or THCP product it is a real dosing risk. Do not eyeball it.
It is late July in Louisiana. A package that sits in a mailbox or on a porch for an afternoon can easily clear 130 degrees inside, and a bag left in a car does worse. This is the most common storage question we get all summer, and almost every answer online treats it as a freshness problem. It is not. It is a dosing problem.
Why melting changes the dose but not the potency
THC, CBD and the minor cannabinoids are stable well past the temperature at which gelatin and pectin give up. So when a bottle melts, the milligrams are still in there. What is gone is the packaging of those milligrams into equal pieces.
A manufacturer gets each gummy to the same strength by controlling the pour. When the batch re-melts and re-sets as one lump, nothing controls where the active ingredient settles. It can pool. The result is a mass where one end may be considerably stronger than the other, and no way for you to tell by looking.
Why guessing goes wrong

The reason this matters more than it sounds is onset. An intoxicating edible typically takes 30 to 90 minutes to be felt and the effects can last 4 to 8 hours. That delay is what turns an unknown dose into a bad evening: nothing seems to be happening, so people take more, and then both amounts arrive at once. Start with the lowest amount you are confident about and wait it out before touching any more.
What to actually do
Our honest advice is short, and it is not the advice that sells the most product in the moment.
- If it is an intoxicating product and the pieces have fused, replace it. Do not portion by eye, do not "take a bit and see." An unknown dose of an intoxicant is the situation every dosing guide exists to prevent.
- If it is a non-intoxicating CBD, CBG or mushroom product, the stakes are lower. Texture is the main casualty. Use judgment, and if it smells or tastes off, throw it out.
- If it arrived melted, contact the retailer. Most will replace a heat-damaged order if you reach out promptly with a photo. That includes us.
- Do not refreeze it and call it fixed. Chilling a fused mass makes it easier to break, which makes it easier to misjudge. Hardness is not the same as knowing the dose.
The summer shipping problem, and the local fix
Heat damage is mostly a transit and mailbox problem, not a cupboard problem. Between June and September in south Louisiana, the riskiest hours in a gummy's life are the ones spent in a delivery vehicle and sitting outside your door.
The simplest fix available to you is one we are admittedly well placed to offer: buy it in person in the summer months. Our shelf is climate controlled and the product goes from our store to your car to your house without an afternoon on a porch in between. If you are ordering anyway, order early in the week so the package is not sitting in a facility over a weekend, and bring it inside quickly.
Keeping the next one intact

One point worth repeating from those pages: skip the refrigerator unless the label calls for it. Fridges are humid and condensation makes gummies tacky, which is a different failure from melting but just as annoying.

Common questions
Are melted gummies still safe to eat?
Heat alone does not usually make a gummy unsafe, and the cannabinoids survive the temperatures that melt gelatin and pectin. The problem is that the dose is no longer evenly divided, so with an intoxicating product you cannot know what a piece contains. If the product has melted and re-set repeatedly, or smells or tastes off, or shows any moisture or mold, throw it out.
Do melted gummies lose potency?
Not meaningfully from a single melt. The milligrams are still in the mass. What is lost is the even distribution between pieces, which is what makes a labeled serving size meaningful in the first place.
Can I just weigh the clump and divide it?
Weight only works if the active ingredient is evenly distributed through the mass, and after an uncontrolled melt and re-set you cannot assume that. It can pool. For a non-intoxicating product the stakes are low enough that it rarely matters. For an intoxicating one, we would replace the product rather than rely on the arithmetic.
My order arrived melted. What should I do?
Contact the retailer promptly with a photo of the package as it arrived. Most retailers, including us, will make it right on a heat-damaged summer delivery.
Should I put gummies in the fridge to stop them melting?
Usually no. Refrigerators are humid and condensation leaves gummies sticky. A cool, dry, dark cupboard is better unless the product label specifically calls for refrigeration.
How do I stop this happening again in summer?
Keep them out of cars, mailboxes and windowsills, and buy in person during the hottest months if you can, which takes the delivery vehicle and the front porch out of the picture entirely.
