Delta-8 vs Delta-9 vs Delta-10: What's the Difference?

All three are intoxicating hemp-derived cannabinoids that can get you high, but they are not interchangeable at the same milligram amount. Delta-9 THC is the strongest and most familiar of the three, the one most people mean by "THC." Delta-8 is chemically similar but generally binds less tightly to the same receptors, so people commonly describe it as milder and clearer. Delta-10 is the least studied of the three and is often described as more energizing and less sedating, again generally milder than delta-9. None of this means a small mg number of one is automatically a small dose of another -- potency per milligram differs across all three, and it differs again from higher-affinity analogs like THCP, which is far more potent per mg than any of them. Always dose from the labeled serving size of the specific product in front of you, not by comparing mg numbers across different cannabinoids.

These products are intoxicating and for adults 21+ only. They can cause a failed drug test, you should not drive or operate machinery after using them, and you should start low and go slow. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. None of this is medical advice -- talk to your doctor. Intoxicating hemp-THC products face the 2026 federal hemp ban; see our live hemp ban tracker for where things stand.

What each one actually is

Delta-9 THC is the primary intoxicating compound in cannabis and hemp, and the cannabinoid most drug tests and most people are referring to when they say "THC." It is the strongest of the three by most accounts and the most studied.

Delta-8 THC is a close chemical relative of delta-9 with a slightly different molecular structure. That difference changes how tightly it binds to the same receptors, which is why people commonly describe delta-8 as producing a milder, clearer effect than delta-9 at a comparable dose -- though "comparable dose" still varies a lot by product and person.

Delta-10 THC is the newest and least-studied of the three. It's generally described as more energizing and less sedating than delta-9, and often milder in overall intensity, but there is less research behind it than the other two.

Why mg numbers don't compare across cannabinoids

This is the part people get wrong most often. A product's real-world potency depends on which cannabinoid it contains, not just the number printed on the label. 5 mg of delta-9 is not the same experience as 5 mg of delta-8, and neither is anywhere close to 5 mg of a high-affinity analog like THCP, which binds far more tightly to the same receptors and is dramatically more potent per milligram (see our THCP vs THC page). Never assume a product is "low dose" just because the mg number on it looks small -- check what it's a milligram OF, and start from that specific product's own labeled serving.

Choosing between them

  • If you're new to hemp-THC, start at the lowest labeled serving of whichever product you have, regardless of which cannabinoid it is.
  • Give edibles a full 1 to 2 hours before deciding whether to take more -- they are slow to kick in no matter which cannabinoid.
  • Read the label for the specific cannabinoid(s) and total mg per serving before you compare products, rather than assuming similar numbers mean a similar experience.
  • Do not stack multiple THC products or combine with alcohol while you are still learning your own tolerance.

Common questions

Is delta-10 stronger than delta-9?

Generally no -- delta-10 is usually described as milder and more energizing than delta-9, which remains the strongest and most studied of the three. Individual experience varies by product and person.

Is delta-8 legal?

Delta-8 is hemp-derived and currently sold in many states, but its legal status is shifting under the 2026 federal hemp ban and varies by state. Check our live hemp ban tracker at /pages/hemp-ban-tracker before you buy.

Do all three show up on a drug test?

Yes. Delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 can all trigger a positive on a standard drug test. See our dedicated page on hemp-THC and drug testing for the full picture.

Can I compare mg amounts across delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 products?

Not directly. Potency per milligram differs by cannabinoid, so the same mg number does not mean the same effect across products. Always dose from that specific product's labeled serving size.

Which one should a beginner try?

There's no single right answer -- many people new to hemp-THC start with a low labeled dose of whichever product they have and wait to see how it feels before taking more. This is not medical advice; talk to your doctor if you have questions about starting.
