Kava and kratom are different plants that get lumped together because both are sold as natural ways to relax, but they work very differently and their legal standing is not remotely the same. Kava (Piper methysticum) is a Pacific Island root traditionally made into a calming, social drink; its kavalactones are not opioids. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a Southeast Asian tree whose leaves act on the body's opioid receptors. In Louisiana, kratom is a Schedule I controlled substance as of August 1, 2025, and possessing or selling it is a crime. How they feel is not the same
Kava is known for a relaxed, sociable, clear-headed calm, which is why it works as an alcohol alternative you can share over a conversation. Kratom's opioid-receptor activity gives it a different profile that shifts with dose, and because of that mechanism it carries a different set of considerations that have drawn FDA attention. We describe kratom here only to draw the contrast. We do not sell it, we cannot sell it in our state, and we do not offer guidance on using it.
The legal picture, stated plainly
Kava is widely available and sold as a beverage botanical in most of the country, including Louisiana. It is not a controlled substance. Kratom is treated very differently: several states ban it outright, others regulate it by age or purity, the FDA has issued public warnings about it, and Louisiana moved from regulation in 2023 to a full Schedule I prohibition in 2025. That gap in legal standing is the single clearest practical difference between the two, and it is a large part of why our menu is built around kava.

Common questions
Is kratom legal in Louisiana?
No. Louisiana classifies kratom's active alkaloids, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, as Schedule I controlled substances under SB 154, effective August 1, 2025. Possession and sale are criminal offenses, with simple possession carrying up to five years. This replaced a 2023 law that had permitted sales to adults 21 and over. Verify the current statute, since laws change.
Is kava the same as kratom?
No. They are different plants from different parts of the world with different active compounds and very different mechanisms. Kava's kavalactones are calming and non-opioid; kratom acts on opioid receptors.
Is kava legal?
Yes. Kava is legal as a beverage botanical across most of the United States, including Louisiana, and it is not a controlled substance. It contains no THC, no CBD, and no kratom.
Does Rad Dad sell kratom?
